Harmony's Realm of Light
Archangels
"Harmony's
Realm of Light is a series of installations begun in 1979 based on
a creation myth where Harmony / light represented good and Chaos/darkness
represented evil. I became fascinated with light at the same time I encountered
glass as a material to make my work. Glass, unlike any other material,
illustrates the myriad qualities of light and metaphorically serves as
spiritual symbolism.
Archangels are individual abstract figures representing the spiritual
realm very much like we understand the idea of angels. They are spiritual
beings with individual characters and personalities. They are transparent
or translucent and can even disappear depending on the quality of light
at the time of perception.
In
order to achieve personalities with the Archangels each one is uniquely
constructed. I use several kiln processes, slumping ( low fire bending),
fusing (mid temperature bonding) and casting (high temperature fusing).
They are all made from plate glass cut into predesigned shapes and then
either fused or cast in molds. In some cases the fused or cast pieces
are then slumped over another mold to achieve the desired shape. The
final piece is assembled with special adhesives from the pre-made shapes."
