The
Ancient Goddess Series
"The
figures from my goddess series of sculptures and bowls are based on
artifacts of female forms from many ancient cultures spanning twenty
five millenia. I use images literal and abstract, appropriated or imagined,
from artifacts found through travel to ancient sites as well as in
books and museums from many diverse cultures.
Art
and life were one and the same to these peoples. The sculptural figure
often served as a dwelling place for ancestral spirits and the female
figure represented the source and continuation of life. Contemporary
cultures refer to these images as idols or goddesses. Perhaps they
were, or perhaps early civilizations view of an all-powerful being
was that of a woman. I choose to present these images in glass because
of the illusive, mystical qualities of the material, suggesting a reality
greater than we perceive."
