"Tarot
cards are a mysterious deck of cards hundreds, maybe even thousands
of years old. Their origin is unknown, however decks have survived
from 15th century Europe and are the direct descendants of modern playing
cards.
The
major Arcana or 22 Trump cards are numbered in a sequence and appear
to tell a picture story of a journey. The Fool and his companions are
Jungian archetypes and are the same strange creatures encountered in
dreams that universally evoke thoughts and feelings much like myths
and fairy tales. The journey represents travels through life; how each
one of us reacts to, confronts and avoids life's lessons. This journey
can be repeated time after time as we identify with or stay stuck in
a particular pattern. As we come to know The Fool and his friends,
perhaps we can make the voyage a bit faster and a lot more fun.
For
many years I have been interested in the Tarot and even occasionally
read the cards. As I worked with the images on the cards I began to
see each one of them with a distinct and unique personality. My Tarot
sculpture grouping developed intuitively about 10 years ago. I was
making a series of abstract sculptural forms in glass for about six
months before I realized I was actually creating individual personalities
from the Major Arcana. It has taken 10 years to complete all 22 images."
